The best first snow summit in India. Also the most crowded one, if you pick the wrong week. Both facts matter. Here is the full picture.

Day 2 · Sankri to Juda ka Talab
4 km · 4-5 hrs · +2,700 ft · Water: none on trail, carry 2 L · Two steep pulls
The trail leaves the upper edge of Sankri and enters pine within ten minutes. This is the theme of the day. Forest, then more forest. Pine and maple first, oak higher up. Two sections will make you breathe hard. Take them slow and they pass.
In winter, snow appears underfoot from mid-trail. By January it starts almost at the village. Langur troops move through these oaks. There are no shops after Sankri. The next one is four days away.
The lake gives no warning. The forest simply opens, and the water is there. From late December it is ice. On clear nights the stars here stop conversations. January night temperature: [F6: your logged range].

Day 3 · Juda ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base
4 km · 3-4 hrs · +2,150 ft · Water: fill at the lake
Starts in oak, ends above the trees. Around 10,400 ft the snow patches turn permanent and the ridgelines open. This is the day the mountains arrive: Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Kalanag, Ranglana in a white arc. Base camp is an open snowfield facing tomorrow’s summit cone. Coldest camp of the trek. Lights out by 8 PM.
Day 4 · Summit day · 2 AM start
6 km round · 6-7 hrs · +1,250 ft, then -3,400 ft · Microspikes on from the start
Why 2 AM? Sunrise from the summit is the point of this trek. Night snow is firm under spikes; late-morning snow slips. And ridge wind builds after mid-morning. So you climb in the dark, headlamps in a line. One false summit will try to fool you. The real top holds a small shrine: Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha under fresh flags, even in January. Twenty minutes up there is standard. The cold decides. [F7: your turnaround rule, stated plainly.]
Days 1 & 5 · The drives, and the mistakes people make
Day 1: pickup 6:30 AM [F5: point + map link]. Mussoorie, Purola, then rough tarmac after Mori. ID checked at the Netwar forest gate, 22 km before Sankri. Day 5: down by late morning, Dehradun by 8-10 PM. Book no same-evening flight or train. Winter roads delay routinely.
Difficulty, honestly
Easy-Moderate. With one Moderate-plus day.
Daily walks are short: 3 to 5 hours. Summit day starts at 2 AM in minus-ten wind chill and climbs steep snow for four. Both facts are true. Prepare for the second one.
You are ready if you can
- Walk 5 km in 55 minutes on flat ground
- Climb three floors of stairs without stopping
- Carry 5 kg for four hours
- Report your health honestly on the medical form
Do not book if
- Unmanaged cardiac, BP, or asthma conditions
- Pregnancy
- Knees that fail on long descents
- [F8: your age policy and doctor-clearance rule]
Best time
Month by month, with numbers
Ranges below come from batch logs, not from other blogs. [F6 replaces these with your logged data.]
Day 8-12°C · Night -5 to -10°C · 5 layers
Snowfall usually lands mid-to-late month. Before it: frost and hard trails. The 20 Dec to 5 Jan window sells out 6-8 weeks early and carries maximum crowd.
Protip: decide with open eyes. New Year energy is real; so are summit queues.
Day 5-10°C · Night -10 to -15°C · 5 layers + microspikes
Deepest snow of the year. The lake freezes solid. Our actual opinion: the second half of January has December’s snow with half its people. Best fortnight on this mountain.
Protip: 18 Jan batch is the one we would book ourselves.
Day 8-12°C · Night -5 to -12°C · 4-5 layers
Snow consolidates. Firmer walking, cleaner ridge. Best month for confident snow walking and ridge photos.
Day 12-18°C · Night 0 to -5°C · 3 layers
Snow retreats uphill. Rhododendrons flower red through the forests. Late March gives both: flowers below, summit snow above.
Day 15-24°C · Night 3-8°C · 2 layers
Green season. Clear pre-monsoon views, quiet trails. The Kedarkantha almost nobody knows. Mid-July and August: closed. Monsoon. Anyone selling those dates is selling a bad week.
Day 10-16°C · Night 5 to -2°C · 3 layers
Washed air after monsoon. The sharpest long-range views of the year. First snow often shows by late November.
